International Day of Women in Diplomacy celebrated at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Netherlands

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Netherlands hosted a special gathering of the Women Ambassadors Group in the Netherlands to celebrate the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, observed annually on 24 June 2024.

The event provided a platform for Women Ambassadors representing different cultures to meet and discuss avenues to reach common goals related to women, in the spirit of global diplomacy. Ambassador Rekha Gunasekera, in her capacity as Chair of the Women Ambassadors Group welcomed the Women Ambassadors from Algeria, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, North Macedonia, Spain, Tanzania, Sudan, United Arab Emirates and the United States as well as other women diplomats and dignitaries to the event. A cultural programme featuring traditional dance performances from Sri Lanka, India and Thailand added a vibrant dimension to the celebration.

The Women Ambassadors Group is the group of women Ambassadors accredited to the Kingdom of the Netherlands as well as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons(OPCW),based in the Netherlands, and also includes women Ambassadors accredited to the Kingdom of the Netherlands based in Brussels. This network aims to facilitate communication and dialogue for women Ambassadors to the Netherlands and holds events/meetings periodically. The Group is Chaired by rotation according to regional groups. The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Netherlands, Rekha Gunasekera is the current Chair representing the Asia-Pacific Group.
