H.E. Rekha Gunasekera
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Netherlands & Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)
During her diplomatic career spanning over 23 years, Ambassador Rekha Gunasekera has held diplomatic positions at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN in New York, the Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing, the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN in Geneva, and the Sri Lanka High Commission in London. At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo, she has held the following positions: Director General of the UN & Human Rights (HR) Division, Director General of the Americas Division, Director of the UN & HR Division, Deputy Director of the Europe Division and Assistant Director of the UN, HR and Multilateral Affairs Division
Ambassador Gunasekera has participated in a number of UN / international conferences and meetings, as a member of the Sri Lanka delegation, including sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Summit of the Heads of State & Government of the G77 & China in Cuba, Summit of the Heads of State & Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Uganda, the Third South Summit in Uganda, Sri Lanka’s 6th Periodic Review under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Geneva, 4th cycle of Sri Lanka’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, Sessions of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Conference of the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New York and the Commission on the Status of Women in New York. She has led the Sri Lanka delegation to the Conference of State Parties to the OPCW in The Hague and at the Governing Council Meetings of the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) in The Hague.
Since May 2024, she is serving as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. She is also the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Ambassador Gunasekera graduated from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka with First Class Honors (B.Sc) and has a M.A. in International Relations from the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Japan.
She is married to Mr. Ranjith Uyangoda, a former Sri Lankan Ambassador and has a daughter.
